Internet Disrupts Across Asia: Issues with SMW3, SMW4 + Flag [update]

Submarine Cables that are responsible for Internet and telephone communications between the Asia and Europe are reportedly cut down between Italy and Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea.

In this mysterious activity (can be co-incidence as well) all three major undersea cables called SE-ME-WE3, SE-ME-WE4 and flag got damaged today. The failures cut the flow of internet and voice data between Europe and Asia, and there’s no time frame for when communications will be restored, reported bloomberg.

Slow browsing; poor throughput and high latency problems are being experienced throughout Gulf, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and neighboring countries.

For most of the countries, including Pakistan, traffic has been routed now via east bound.

Bloomberg further reports that priority will be to recover the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable, then the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable. There is information from France Telecom that Sea Me We4 could be operating by Dec. 25 and that the situation should be back to normal by Dec. 31.

Businesses, especially online one, call centers, BPOs and others are likely to be badly hit by this outage, which were already undergoing severe economic downfall these days.

The SMW4 cable, also known as SEA-ME-WE 4or South East Asia- Middle East-Western Europe 4 cable network, connects 12 countries: Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy and France.

I have just recieved Email from Micronet saying that there are connectivity issues going on with SMW-3, SMW-4 and FLAG, thus all Pakistani internet users are facing degraded Internet services. They are not sure, as of now, about the cause of these issues; however Both TWA and PTCL are working with their international counterparts to get this issue discovered and resolved as soon as possible.

Slow browsing, poor throughput and high latency problems are being experienced through Pakistan by Dial-up and Broadband users alike.

At the moment, there is no timeline when this will be fixed but we expect this to be fixed within the next few hours.

Luxury Travel Declines at British Airways

British Airways said first- and business-class travel fell 8.6 percent last month as the credit crisis and economic slowdown led to job losses and tighter budgets in the City of London and Wall Street. Overall traffic declined 4.8 percent from a year earlier, the airline said. Load factor, a measure of seat occupancy, fell 4.3 percentage points, to 74 percent. Premium traffic increased 2.2 percent in August. “Trading conditions continue to be challenging,” British Airways said. “Long-haul premium traffic has softened after the summer and forward bookings are being affected by the increased anxiety in financial markets and by the uncertain economic outlook.”

Yahoo Messenger 9.0 Released

Microsoft just released Windows Live messenger 9.0 and almost after a week, the final version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 has been released. This version supports Windows XP and Vista and has many new features with an improved user-interface.

With this launch, Yahoo! introduced a feature – Pingbox. This is an application that can be embedded into your blog, website or social network page where visitors can IM you anonymously or identifying themselves. You can also reply them back. You can reveal or open your Yahoo! ID.

How to forward e-mail appropriately

A friend who is a computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails. Please read the short letter below, even if you’re sure you already follow proper procedures.

Do you really know how to forward e-mails? 50% of us DO; 50% DO NOT.

Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it?

Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their e-mail addresses and names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every e-mail address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That’s right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel!
How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps:

When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That’s right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second You MUST click the “Forward” button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don’t click on “Forward” first, you won’t be able to edit the message at all.
Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc: fields for adding e-mail addresses. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address. If you don’t see your BCC: option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that’s it, it’s that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say “Undisclosed Recipients” in the “TO:” field of the people who receive it.
Remove any “FW :” in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.
ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent.
Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses. A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (Actually, if you think about it, who’s supposed to send the petition in to whatever cause it supports? And don’t believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, it just isn’t so!)
One of the main ones I hate is the ones that say that something like, “Send this email to 10 people and you’ll see something great run across your screen.” Or, sometimes they’ll just tease you by saying something really cute will happen IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN!
(Trust me, I’m still seeing some of the same ones that I waited on 10 years ago!) I don’t let the bad luck ones scare me either, they get trashed. (Could be why I haven’t won the lottery?)
Before you forward an Amber Alert, or a Virus Alert, or some of the other ones floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward d them. Most of them are junk mail that’s been circling the net for YEARS! Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out at Snopes. Just go to http://www.snopes.com/
Its really easy to find out if it’s real or not. If it’s not, please don’t pass it on. So please, in the future, let’s stop the junk mail and the viruses.Finally, here’s an idea! Let’s send this to everyone we know. This is something that SHOULD be forwarded.

Remove Chinese Virus Manually

Do you know u can remove chinese viruses manual? This is how to detect whether your hard disk or removable disk has been infected with Chinese virus. When u rightclick your hard drive or your removable disk and what u have there is not readable (i.e chinese lang), then follow these steps

open command prompt i.e click start button, select run, type cmd then press enter
change the default directory to C:\ (i.e from c:\document and settings\user) type C: then press enter
type attrib -a -s -h -r and press enter
type dir and press enter (dir is a DOS command to view the files and directory of your hard drive). u should see some strange files like autorun.ini, autorun.inf, system.exe, desktop.ini.
type del autorun.* and press enter (this should delete all autorun files)
type del system.exe and press enter
type del *.ini and press enter

Do this one by one for all your partition and your flash drive if infected. You can now unplug your flash and plug it back, Virus will be removed insha Allah
